A Woman Sacrifice

KHARTOUM - (Sudanow) A housewife was busy doing her routine household work when all of a sudden policemen rushed in and started a search. After a while the police fished out a quantity of narcotics hidden in the house. Then when the police asked about the whereabouts of her husband she, for the first time, came to realize that her husband was a drug dealer.
Thinking about the coming scenario that her husband would be jailed and her family of eight children would be scattered, she promptly told the police that the stuff was hers: She thought it over that if her husband were to be jailed, she would not be able to look after the kids with her tiny salary as a teacher.
Learning about what had happened, her husband rushed to the police station and tried to take the responsibility, but she was adamant. She convinced him that he could do better with the children than she could. At last her husband was convinced and allowed her to take the role. Based on her repeated confession, a court of law had no choice but to convict her and ruled a 20 years prison sentence.
Upon a plea that she was a woman with eight young children to look after, the court reduced the sentence to 12 years.
During the first four years in jail she managed to memorize the Holy Koran. According to the prison regulations, any convict who memorizes the Holy Book, has the right to a plea for mercy. She made the appeal and her sentence was cut to eight years, with four years remaining for her behind the bars.
Lawyer Hazim Awadalkareem, in the process of a program he used to present on the Almanal TV Channel, heard about her story and decided to see her in jail. Dr. Hazim could not believe his eyes that the respectful woman standing in front of him was a drug dealer. Asking her about her offence, she said she was a drug dealer.
“But you do not look so and your features do not look like a criminal”, he argued. But she insisted. He continued to press her until she broke in tears and told him the truth. ”I did that for the eight children who might have suffered more if their father was to be jailed,” she said.
She told Dr. Hazim that this was a secret nobody else had known.
Speaking during his TV program, Dr. Hazim made an appeal for mercy. ”She had helped us with good conduct and she had also helped us with memorizing the Koran and it is time for us to repay her,” pleaded Dr. Hazim. Receiving the note, the authorities agreed to set her free for good conduct after two years from the remaining four years. After the two years she was set free and returned to her family.
Her husband had also received a good message from what she had done. He changed course, refrained from drug trafficking and became a good citizen.
